Maersk's five-day cancellation timeline: an urgent check for Vietnam export bookings

A Maersk advisory effective 15 October allows eligible bookings that have not materialised to be cancelled once five days have passed since the first vessel's ETD.

Maersk changed its automatic booking-cancellation timeline on 15 October 2026, effective the same day. An eligible shipment may now be cancelled automatically when at least five days have passed since the first vessel's estimated time of departure and the shipment has not materialised.

The wording matters. The notice says "eligible" and "may"; it does not say that every booking will be cancelled. It also does not define "materialised" or explain route, cargo, account or exception rules. A shipper should therefore check the live booking with Maersk instead of inventing a status test.

Why Vietnam exporters should review open bookings now

The rule uses the first vessel's ETD as its time reference. A Vietnam-origin booking that rolled, missed a cut-off or remains operationally incomplete could already be inside the five-day review window even if the cargo is still intended to move.

Maersk says the change is designed to release unused capacity earlier. Its Vietnam export page separately requires shippers to deliver full containers, complete customs declaration and register with the port before the CY cut-off stated in the booking confirmation. It also says shipping instructions do not replace export customs documents and that missing documentation deadlines may lead to shut-out or misrouting.

Those local procedures do not define when a shipment has "materialised" under the new notice. They do show why booking status, physical cargo progress, customs work and documentation should be checked together.

Five checks for open Vietnam export bookings

  • List every open Maersk booking whose first vessel ETD was at least five days ago. Keep the first ETD visible even if a later schedule appears.
  • Check the live status in the carrier account and the latest booking confirmation. Do not assume a vessel roll, amended ETD, empty-container pickup, gate-in or shipping-instruction submission prevents automatic cancellation.
  • Reconcile the shipment file: booking number, vessel and voyage, container and seal, CY cut-off, shipping-instruction cut-off, customs status and any written carrier message. This is an internal control list, not Maersk's definition of "materialised".
  • If the cargo is still intended to move, contact Maersk Customer Service promptly as the advisory requests and obtain written confirmation of the booking's current status and next action.
  • If the booking has been cancelled, do not dispatch cargo or a truck against the old instruction. Secure a valid booking or written carrier direction, then update the shipper, trucker, warehouse, customs broker and consignee.

Vietnam freight and import-export impact

The immediate risk is operational ambiguity around an ageing booking. A cancellation can require the parties to re-confirm transport instructions before cargo moves. For time-sensitive exports, that makes one booking owner and a daily exception list more useful than treating every confirmed booking as permanently active.

The official notice does not publish a fee, grace period beyond the stated timeline, guaranteed warning, rebooking priority, route list, delay estimate or rule for other carriers. This article makes none of those claims. Confidence is high for the dated Maersk rule and its Vietnam export procedures, but low for any individual booking until Maersk confirms it.
