Maersk Vietnam changes its bill amendment fee trigger on 15 September

A carrier-specific document-control update for Vietnam shipments: from 15 September 2026, Maersk's VND 900,000 amendment fee is tied to requests submitted from the day after ship-on-board.

Vietnam exporters using Maersk have a short window to tighten bill-of-lading review. Maersk's current Vietnam local-information page says that, effective 15 September 2026, its Transport Document Amendment Fee (AME) of VND 900,000 per bill of lading applies to any amendment request submitted one day after the ship-on-board date, described as SOB + 1, regardless of the request channel. The page also says all listed local charges are subject to 5% VAT.

This is a Maersk commercial charge, not a Vietnam Customs fee and not a rule for every carrier. It does not change a shipper's legal duty to provide accurate cargo and party information.

What changes on 15 September

The same live page labels the current channel-based process as expiring on or after 15 September. Under that older process, the first amendment through the electronic channel is free and AME begins from the second request; for an email request, AME applies after the first verify copy has been sent.

The new wording changes the control point. The question is no longer only how many revisions were made or which channel was used. Teams must record when the amendment request was submitted relative to the ship-on-board date.

The notice does not say that every request before SOB + 1 is necessarily free, and it does not define how the rule interacts with special contracts, late customs-manifest changes or destination-country charges. Obtain the applicable quotation and carrier confirmation for the shipment.

Six controls before cargo sails

  • Assign the Transport Document Receiver before submitting shipping instructions. Maersk's export FAQ says this is the only party authorised to request an amendment or issuance of the transport document.
  • Reconcile shipper, consignee, notify party, goods description, package count, weight, container and seal data against the commercial and operational files before the first verify copy.
  • Give the exporter, forwarder and overseas buyer one written deadline to return corrections. Make that deadline earlier than the carrier's document cut-off and planned ship-on-board date.
  • Save the first verify copy, the final approval, the request timestamp and the ship-on-board evidence in the same shipment file.
  • If a change becomes necessary, submit one consolidated correction rather than several fragmented messages, while preserving the audit trail.
  • Before approving an amendment, ask who pays AME, whether 5% VAT and any reissue, customs or destination charge also applies, and whether the request can affect cargo release or arrival documentation.

Vietnam freight and import-export impact

The direct impact is document-control cost and commercial coordination. A correction discovered after SOB + 1 can bring the listed VND 900,000 AME into scope for that Maersk bill of lading, before VAT. A wrong consignee, description or document-release instruction may also require more work among the exporter, forwarder, buyer and carrier, but the official sources do not publish a standard delay, cargo-hold probability or total cost. This article therefore makes no such estimate.

Maersk's August export FAQ still describes the older first-web-amendment treatment and says customers should contact Maersk before changing a bill within ten days of ETA because import-manifest rules and extra charges can depend on the destination. Where the FAQ and the live local-charge page differ after 15 September, confirm the current treatment with Maersk and retain the written response.

Confidence is high in the amount, effective date, SOB + 1 trigger and 5% VAT note shown on Maersk's live Vietnam page on 4 September 2026. Confidence is medium for any individual invoice because the page is dynamic and shipment treatment can depend on contract, document type, timing and destination. This is operational guidance, not a carrier quotation, customs ruling or legal opinion.
