Vietnam–Europe freight: recheck LCL quotes and Suez routing

Maersk has stopped one Vietnam-to-Europe LCL peak-season surcharge while Gemini services begin moving back through Suez. Here is what to verify before confirming cargo.

Two carrier notices now deserve a fresh check for Vietnam–Europe cargo. Maersk says its LCL Peak Season Surcharge on the E1W and E2W trades no longer applies from a Price Calculation Date of 17 September 2026. Vietnam is expressly included among the Far East Asia origins covered by that notice.

Separately, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are moving four Gemini Asia–Europe services from the Cape of Good Hope route to the Red Sea and Suez route. The first announced westbound change starts from Tanjung Pelepas on 19 September. These are useful operational signals, but they do not mean that every Vietnam shipment is cheaper or faster.

What is verified

The surcharge change is narrow. It applies to Maersk LCL shipments on E1W and E2W from the listed Far East Asia origins to North Europe and Mediterranean Europe, based on the Price Calculation Date. The notice does not state a surcharge amount, promise a lower all-in quote or remove other origin, ocean, destination, emergency or optional charges.

For the routing change, Maersk uses the service names AE5, AE11, AE12 and ME2. Hapag-Lloyd names the corresponding services NE4, SE2, SE1 and IEX. Both carriers say the affected services will use Suez instead of sailing around the Cape of Good Hope.

The first westbound dates published by both carriers match for AE11/SE2 on 19 September and AE5/NE4 on 21 September. They do not match for ME2/IEX: Maersk publishes a last-call ETD from Colombo of 24 September, while Hapag-Lloyd publishes 19 September for the same vessel and voyage. Both say the first AE12/SE1 sailing will be announced later. That discrepancy should be resolved against the booking confirmation and latest carrier schedule, not averaged or guessed.

The Suez Canal Authority also reported on 16 September that OOCL Portugal made COSCO Shipping Lines' first southbound Suez transit since the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb tensions. It reported 72.1 million net tonnes of container ships through the canal in January–August 2026, up 54.2% from 46.7 million net tonnes in the same period of 2025. This is corridor context, not a reliability or capacity guarantee for a Vietnam booking.

Six checks before confirming cargo

### 1. Re-price the exact LCL file

Ask for a new quote with the Price Calculation Date shown. Confirm whether the file is Maersk LCL on E1W or E2W and whether the removed PSS has disappeared as a separate line. Compare the all-in origin-to-destination total, not one surcharge in isolation.

### 2. Identify the actual ocean service

Record the feeder, transshipment hub, mainline service, vessel, voyage and planned European discharge port. A Vietnam origin alone does not prove that the shipment will connect to one of the four changed Gemini services.

### 3. Resolve the ME2/IEX date conflict

If the booking connects to ME2/IEX, request written confirmation of the first applicable voyage and the last call before Suez. The two official carrier pages currently publish different westbound dates.

### 4. Reconfirm cut-offs and ETA

Check cargo cut-off, documentation cut-off, VGM cut-off, feeder connection, transshipment time and current ETA on the booking confirmation. A shorter route does not by itself guarantee an earlier arrival for an individual shipment.

### 5. Keep a change record

Save the quote, charge breakdown, booking confirmation, schedule snapshot and later carrier amendments together. If the service or route changes again, the team can identify which commercial and operating assumptions changed.

### 6. Set a final decision time

For time-sensitive cargo, name the person who will accept the route, price and ETA after the latest check. Compare alternative carriers or modes only on current written offers for the same shipment profile.

Vietnam freight and trade impact

Vietnam exporters using qualifying Maersk LCL services to Europe have an immediate reason to refresh quotations dated from 17 September. Shippers whose cargo may connect through Tanjung Pelepas, Singapore or Colombo into the affected Gemini services also need to refresh routing and milestone data as the first sailings change.

The notices do not establish a market-wide rate reduction, a fixed transit-time saving, a blanket Suez return, guaranteed space or guaranteed schedule reliability. Confidence is high for the carrier-specific changes and dates reproduced directly from the official notices. Confidence is medium for any individual Vietnam shipment until its carrier issues a current quote, booking confirmation and route plan. This is operational information, not a binding transport offer.
