Vietnam National Day: cargo cut-offs to check before the five-day break

Vietnam's 2026 National Day break runs for five days, from Saturday 29 August through Wednesday 2 September. Vietnam Customs has directed units to maintain staff for clearance work, procedures and IT incidents throughout the holiday. That continuity does not cancel carrier document deadlines, office closures, terminal rules or depot arrangements.

CMA CGM Vietnam's official holiday notice illustrates the distinction. Its offices will close on 1 and 2 September and resume on 3 September, while a separate carrier table assigns final Shipping Instruction (SI) and Verified Gross Mass (VGM) cut-offs to individual sailings from Hải Phòng, Ho Chi Minh City and Vũng Tàu.

Deadlines already arrive before the holiday

The CMA CGM PDF is dated 25 August 2026. For the package date of 28 August, it lists four same-day cut-offs: YANGTSE / CSCL BOHAI SEA at 11:59 for VNSGN/VNVUT, and HHX2 / FENG XIN DA 29, CT8 / QINGDAO TOWER and TWS / EVER META at 14:00 for VNHPH. Other listed sailings have deadlines on 31 August or 3 September.

These are carrier- and voyage-specific examples, not a national cut-off calendar. Vessel schedules, booking status and instructions can change. Use the notice to identify urgency, then verify the live cut-off in the booking confirmation or directly with the carrier before relying on it.

CMA CGM also warns that late final instructions can contribute to transshipment shut-outs, cargo misrouting and resulting charges. The carrier does not publish a standard delay or charge for every late submission, so none is estimated here.

Customs coverage is not full-chain availability

The Government News report says Customs units must arrange holiday duty, keep import-export clearance operating, staff IT systems and handle incidents. It also records Customs' recommendation that businesses declare early and avoid concentrating files immediately before or after the break.

That is positive for continuity, but it should not be read as a guarantee that every physical inspection, specialized authority, warehouse, depot, trucking supplier, bank or carrier desk operates on normal hours. Each party in the shipment chain still needs separate confirmation.

The Government's 19 August traffic direction says the five-day break is expected to raise traffic volumes and the risk of congestion, including around major routes and transport hubs. This supports allowing flexibility for container drayage, but it does not prove that a particular port road or shipment will be delayed.

Six checks for Vietnam importers and exporters

• Match every active booking to its port of loading, service, vessel, voyage, ETD and current SI/VGM cut-off; do not reuse a deadline from another sailing.
• Submit final SI and VGM early enough to obtain system or carrier acceptance, then retain the timestamp and confirmation.
• Reconcile shipper, consignee, notify party, commodity, package count, gross weight, container and seal data before the document team becomes unavailable.
• Confirm holiday hours separately with Customs, terminal, empty depot, warehouse, trucking provider, specialized inspection body and carrier.
• Recheck road conditions and gate appointments before dispatching a container; keep a documented alternative time or route where practical.
• Separate payment rules from cargo cut-offs. CMA CGM says its late-payment-fee calculation excludes 1 and 2 September, but that statement does not waive unrelated freight, terminal, storage, demurrage or detention terms.

Freight impact and confidence

The immediate Vietnam freight impact is a coordination gap: customs clearance coverage continues, but some carrier document cut-offs fall before or during the wider holiday period. A file that is technically declarable may still miss a carrier or voyage deadline if SI, VGM, payment or hand-off responsibilities are not closed in time.

Confidence is high in the five-day holiday period, Customs coverage direction, CMA CGM office dates and the cut-offs printed in the dated carrier notice. Confidence is medium for any individual shipment until its live booking, terminal acceptance and service-provider hours are reconfirmed. No universal port closure, customs stoppage, guaranteed congestion, standard delay or fixed extra cost is claimed.
